PTA Members Get Discounts With Local Businesses
The Pleasanton PTA Council is joining with local businesses for PTA Shops Ptown. The program is an opportunity to support local businesses using your PTA membership. Just show your PTA card to receive discounts from participating downtown merchants. By buying in Pleasanton, not only are you helping the local economy, you are helping our town protect important city services. For example, by spending $100 with a locally-owned business, $68 stays here in town. With a retail chain, $43 of that same $100 stays in the area. For more information, click on the box above.

For the 2011-2012 school year, we have collected over 2,800 points of Labels for Education.  In November,  we submitted over $300.00 worth of Box Tops that will fund technology, classrooms and other PTA events. The $hopfor$chool program with Fresh&Easy is coming to an end so keep those receipts of over $20 coming.

Thank you so much for your support. Together with Box Tops, Labels for Education and $hopfor$chool, we can build a better school for our children and let them Soar at Mohr.

For more information about Box Tops, Labels for Education and the $hopfor$chool program, contact Doris Lem, our coordinator, at meljoez@comcast.net.

Tri-Valley YMCA Kindergarten Readiness

SPACE IS AVAILABLE. ENROLL TODAY!

This program gets children ready to go to kindergarten with fun and enriching activities suited to your child's age and development. We make the most of every child's natural desire to learn by providing plenty of opportunities to explore and to learn as they play. We plan each day (the schedule, pace and content) according to recognized principles of early childhood education and the California Department of Education prekindergarten standards. The daily schedules and monthly planners, which are posted at each location, include:

  • Language and early reading and writing skills
  • Character development
  • Fine and gross motor skill development
  • Math and science activities
  • Arts and crafts
  • Play that uses different learning styles and preferences

Studies show that children who attend high-quality preschool programs:

  • Start kindergarten with more skills
  • Can focus better on doing and completing tasks
  • Have better social, verbal and number skills
  • Are more likely to do better in school for years to come

Program Fees: 5 days per week - $300 per month; 3 days per week - $199 per month

New volunteer tutor training

 January 14, 2012

Saturday 1pm - 4pm

Change a Life!  Become a tutor.

Pleasanton Library's Project Read needs volunteer tutors to help adults with English skills.

We have students from all over the world-who are now Pleasanton residents. Most students have basic English skills and many have studied English in their home country. Native-born students with low reading skills may have had their education disrupted or they may be illiterate in two languages.

Our students have made a big commitment toward improving their English: You can help them to succeed.

California has approximately 3.4 million adults with below basic literacy skills. Library volunteers help adults with reading and writing skills so they can reach their potential as workers, parents, community members and life-long learners. Over 100 libraries serve nearly 20,000 adults annually. These adults are now voting for the first time, reading newspapers, reading aloud to their children, participating in their community and securing jobs.

Project Read offers: Free one-on-one tutoring,  Small group classes, Drop-in Conversation Groups, Training for tutors, Instructional resources

What it means to be a tutor: You should be at least 18 years old, fluent in American English but not necessarily a native speaker, You should be able to devote a consistent hour or two weekly to your student for a semester

What are the rewards? Countless! You help someone to read or learn English who is eager and grateful for your assistance. You establish a relationship with someone from the community you might never have met before and learn about a new culture. You learn to look at the richness of your own country, language and culture in a different way, through different eyes and ears.

Overall value: Priceless!

Please call or email to register for the Project Read training. For more information, email pjohnson@ci.pleasanton.ca.us or call Penny Johnson, 931-3405.
